Occ Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care s upport partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical N urse (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provid esdirect care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care unit c oordination. Theindividual in this position is expected to perform basic care andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient popu lationneeds in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected t oassist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individual isex pected to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacy ofev ery patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpatien tcare. They are expected to know and adhere to all basic policiesand pro cedures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.They are e xpected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral unit upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as needed,with or without direct supervision. The NA isexpected to use accurate ve rbal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriately in the electronic health record.Perform a variety of clerical duties inv olved in preparing, maintaining,andprocessing patient, unit(s) and hosp ital data and records to includeoperating the organization's patient car e information systems.Individuals in this role are typically scheduled f or NCA I shifts atminimum 25% of the time.
Work Performed
Preparepatients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures an dprovide manual assistance as required.Obtain and record patient data fo r medical records noting and informingRN/LPN of information collected.Ad minister treatment and personal care procedures to patients including,bu t not limited to, feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nailca re, bed-making, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, andbowel a nd bladder elimination; provide such additional care as requiredto meett he personal needs and comfort of assigned patients.Participate in teachi ng activities by reinforcing teaching instructed byRN and/or providersas needed.Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helpin gposition patients, changing non-sterile dressing and weighing patients. Take and record vital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags. Note andrep ort any changes in patient's condition. Turn and position patients,setup and feed patients as necessary, provide patients with freshdrinkingwater.Perform fingersticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriatetraini ng, document and notify RN/LPN.Assist with admission, discharge, andtran sportation of patients. Followstandard precautions and use personalprote ctive equipment as required.Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests o n patient specimens. Cleanassigned area; stock and replenish supplies an d equipment as required.Participate in ownprofessional development by ma intaining requiredskills validation and attending educational offerings. Support thedevelopment of other staff and formal learners.May also perf orm clean dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old.Perform avariety of clerical tasks involved in operating theorganization's patient care i nformation system. Acknowledge orders onEMR task list, verify printout a nd input verified orders to requestdiets, treatments, nursing services, equipment and diagnostic andlaboratory tests and procedures.Assemble and maintain patient charts from admission through discharge.Prepare and up load paper documents into the electronic medical record(EMR).Navigate el ectronic medical record, access patient information, generatereports, sc hedule appointments and manage task list.Assign nursing staff tocommunic ation systems.Perform other related duties incidental to the work descri bed herein.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working k nowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administeringroutine a nd special treatments to patients.Working knowledge of sanitation, perso nal hygiene and basic health andsafety precautions applicable to work in a hospital.Working knowledge of the organization and physicallayout of thehospital.Working knowledge of infection control proceduresand safetyp recautions.Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking.This posi tion is very active and requires standing, walking, bending,kneeling, st ooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Theemployeemust freque ntly lift or move objects and patients weighing over35 pounds with assis tance or appropriate lift equipment.Ability to understand and follow ora l and written instructions.Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computerand/or paper documentation tools.Ability to e stablish and maintain effective working relationships withpatients and h ospital staff.Working knowledge of principles and practicesof providing non-professional bedside patient care.Pre-employment Physical Capacity T esting may be required.
